Speyside is home to no less than 50% of the Malt Whisky Distilleries in Scotland. Speyside is the geographical heart of Malt Whisky making today.
This has not always been so. In the early 1800's there were only 2 registered distilleries, with hundreds of illicit stills hidden in the glens and hillsides. The Rev. John Grant of Tomintoul is quoted as saying, "Tammtoul is inhabited by 37 families .. all of them sell whisky and all of them drink it".
That Speyside boasts some of the finest barley growing farmland in the country. The quality of the land, abundant water, ready to hand peat, coal and an infastructure to meet transportation needs, naturally aided the sweet and very sophisticated whiskies to be favoured for blending and keeping back as exceptional Malts. We still find the excellence today in such Malts as the Tomintoul 16, Bennrinnes, Glenfarclas, Benromach, Linkwood and 40 or so other famous names.
