Speyside Malts - Whisky Castle

Speyside is home to no less than 50% of the Malt Whisky Distilleries in Scotland. Speyside is at the geographical heart of Malt Whisky making in Scotland today. Situated in the Eastern Highlands surrounding the Spey Valley the area offers a pristine environment for the production of Malt whisky.

It is easy to understand that the main part of the malt distilling industry came to settle here. Speyside boasts some of the finest barley growing farmland in the country. Abundant high quality water, ready to hand peat, coal and the then newly formed infastructure of the railways at the turn of the 20th century quicky made Speyside in to the largest area outputting malt whisky in Scotland. These days there are now 50 working stills in speyside, many owned by very large world renown comglomerates of the drinks industry such as Diageo and Chivas Brothers Ltd. They are :-
